La Gatera de la Villa is a non-profit cultural collective, entirely independent of any political, ideological, or religious currents. The members of this collective are lovers of free thought and freedom of expression, with a humanistic and democratic orientation towards society.
We publish a free quarterly digital magazine about the history and heritage of Madrid, the first of its kind to emerge on the internet. We are guided solely by the desire to share and popularize some of the many diverse and multifaceted aspects that our city and its region have to offer.
It should be noted that we are not historians, artists, or professional writers, but mere aficionados in the literal sense of the word. Each of us has an academic background and professional career completely unrelated to cultural themes. However, it is precisely this independence that grants us enormous freedom to address the most varied and disparate topics.
Nevertheless, if we are to list any modest achievements or background to justify, to some extent, the audacity of creating a magazine like La Gatera, we can share that, as the “restless cats” (*gatos*) that we are, our group includes members and co-founders of cultural associations such as «Amigos del Foro Cultural de Madrid» or the «Asociación Cultural Barrio La Fuentecilla», organizers of guided tours through the old streets of historic Madrid for friends and acquaintances, former contributors to magazines like «Madrid Histórico» or «La Ilustración de Madrid», authors of books on Madrid themes, occasional lecturers, and we have even appeared on radio and television networks, always in relation to matters concerning our city.
But we are not alone in this journalistic adventure, as we are fortunate to have a large number of collaborators. Thanks to their articles, research, works, photographs, illustrations, and reviews, we not only cover the most diverse aspects, but we have also managed to grow and solidify this magazine into a reality. They, too, are La Gatera de la Villa.
And while our magazine is our main activity, we also carry out other projects, such as our blog, organizing tours and walks, and the publication, so far, of three books.
